The poetical documentary Shugendô Now examines how a group of modern Japanese tries to integrate the mystical lessons from Japanese mountain asceticism into their busy city lives. During difficult climbs in the sacred mountains of Kumano, practitioners of Shugendô (literally: the path of training and testing) purify the six roots of observation, revitalise their energy and reconnect with their true nature. But how do you return to the busy life of Osaka and Tokyo after such an enlightening experience in the mountains?
