Orlando di Lasso – Magnificat Vergine bella
The Sibyls, antique prophetesses, predicted the arrival of the redeemer in oracular language. Lassus, from Bergen in the Belgian province of Henegouwen, composed their enigmatic sayings as a motet cycle in an ultra-chromatic, esoteric style. Cypriaan de Rore, from Ronse, composed the entire last section of Petrarca's Canzoniere -eleven sonnets about Mary - as a cycle of Italian madrigali spirituali, each beginning with the invocation ‘Vergine’. Lassus, in turn, chose Rore’s first madrigal as model for a Magnificat, the ode by Mary to her miraculous pregnancy. |
